Who We Support
Vector Wild supports young people navigating a wide range of needs — including neurodiversity, anxiety, and confidence challenges. This is not an exhaustive list; every young person is considered individually.
Understanding Additional Support Needs
ASN, SEN & SEND — what it means, and how we help.
Young people don't need a formal diagnosis to need support. Whether the term used is ASN, SEN or SEND, the principle is the same: removing barriers so every young person can take part, grow and thrive.
What qualifies as an Additional Support Need?
A child may have an additional support need for a short or long period of time. It does not automatically require a formal medical or educational diagnosis, and can stem from a wide range of factors:
Disabilities or health conditions
Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or physical and sensory impairments.
Social, emotional or wellbeing needs
Bereavement, bullying, trauma, or being a young carer.
Family circumstances
A difficult home life, or being in the care system.
Learning environment barriers
English as an additional language, or being considered gifted and talented.
How does this differ across the UK?
While the principle is shared across the UK, the terminology differs depending on where you live:
ASN
Additional Support Needs
Defined by the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act. The term ASN is most prominent here.
SEN / SEND
Special Educational Needs (and Disabilities)
More commonly referred to as SEN or SEND, governed by the Children and Families Act and the SEND Code of Practice.
How are these needs met?
Schools often create individualised or targeted support plans to remove barriers to education. Depending on the severity of the need, support can range from:
In-class support
One-to-one time with a teacher or specialist assistant within a mainstream classroom.
Targeted or specialist units
Specialist provision within a mainstream school, tailored to particular needs.
Dedicated special schools
Full-time enrolment in a school designed around complex or higher-level needs.
Accessing the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE)
The DofE is deliberately designed to be inclusive. Young people with ASN, SEN or SEND can take part at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, with the programme adapted — not lowered — to meet their needs.
- Sections (Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition) can be extended in duration to allow more time to complete them.
- Activities can be adapted to the young person's abilities, with reasonable adjustments made throughout.
- Expeditions can use accessible routes, shorter distances or alternative modes of travel where appropriate.
- Additional adult support can be provided during expeditions and sessions.
- A DofE Leader or Licensed Organisation can help tailor the programme and confirm what's possible.
Vector Wild can support young people through their DofE journey as part of a wider mentoring or outdoor learning programme — helping them access the award in a way that feels achievable, meaningful and genuinely their own.
