The journeys that shaped our purpose.
We each arrived at Vector Wild through different journeys — one through military leadership and the boardroom, the other through teaching, nurture and the outdoors. But we share the same conviction: that every young person deserves someone who believes in them before they believe in themselves.
Rich spent over twenty years leading in demanding environments, from the British Army to medical recruitment, before dedicating himself fully to expedition leadership and mentoring young people. Throughout, one truth remained constant: people achieve extraordinary things when someone believes in them.
Viv spent sixteen years in secondary schools, teaching art and design while building timetabled outdoor learning programmes and leading residential adventures abroad. As Principal Teacher of Nurture and Resilience, she worked with some of the most vulnerable young people — and saw firsthand how the outdoors transforms what a classroom cannot reach.
Together, we built Vector Wild because too many young people are losing confidence in themselves, and because we believe the right relationship, in the right environment, can change the direction of a life.

The path to Vector Wild.
Military Leadership
Leadership has always been at the heart of my career. Serving in the British Army taught me how trust, calmness and clear communication help people perform under pressure. Those lessons continue to shape every mentoring relationship today.
Corporate Leadership
After leaving the military, I spent over twenty years in medical recruitment, working my way up to Managing Director and Chief Executive. It was a career that taught me about strategy, people and resilience — but throughout those years I was never far from adventure. I qualified as a British Canoeing Level 3 Coach, Leader and Accredited Guide, spending every spare moment exploring inland and coastal waterways. The pandemic eventually provided the catalyst to leave the boardroom behind and focus on what had always mattered most.
Life Outdoors
For more than fifteen years I've worked as an expedition leader, outdoor instructor and mentor. I've watched quiet young people become leaders. I've seen confidence emerge around campfires, on mountain paths and in canoes. I've learned that nature creates space for conversations that rarely happen indoors.
Family Experience
Like many families, ours has navigated the realities of neurodiversity. That lived experience has given me a deeper appreciation of the challenges many young people and parents face every day. Vector Wild has been built from both professional expertise and personal understanding.
Why Vector Wild Exists
I don't believe every young person needs another intervention. Many simply need one trusted adult who notices their strengths before focusing on their struggles. Someone prepared to walk beside them. Not in front. Not behind. Alongside. That belief became Vector Wild — and I'm grateful to walk it alongside my co-founder, Viv Boyd, who shares that same conviction.
Viv's Story
A life shaped by nature and nurture.
Roots in Nature
I have always felt a deep connection to nature. Growing up in Dumfries and Galloway — a wild and wonderful natural playground — it was perhaps inevitable that I would gravitate towards working in the outdoors. Those early years shaped my belief that the outdoors is where young people come alive.
Teaching & The Outdoors
After art school and having children, I began working as an outdoor instructor, spending my time on lochs, up hills and in forests. I loved being part of young people's development — watching them push their boundaries, form new friendships and grow in stature. That passion led me into secondary schools for sixteen years, where I taught art and design but never let go of my belief that the outdoors could heal and inspire. I wrote and taught a timetabled outdoor learning course, spoke at an Education Scotland Outdoor Conference, and achieved Professional Recognition in Outdoor Learning from the General Teaching Council Scotland.
Nurture & Resilience
I became Principal Teacher of Nurture, then of Resilience — roles that proved the most rewarding of my career. Working within a trauma-informed approach, I supported school refusers, young people with adverse childhood experiences, eating disorders, anger management challenges and neurodiverse conditions. The nurture principle that all behaviour is communication resonated deeply with me, and I used the outdoors frequently — knowing young people behave differently when not confined by classroom walls.
A Different Path
Frustrated by the number of young people falling through the net, I eventually decided to leave mainstream teaching. I wanted to do more to help young people develop resilience, a solution-focused mindset and the connections they need to cope in an ever-changing world. I wanted to help them build a toolkit of skills for life.
Life Beyond Work
Out of work, I'm happiest in the outdoors — in the woods or on the water in my canoe or on my paddleboard. I love camping in my hammock, foraging, learning about the natural world, and taking on outdoor fundraising challenges every couple of years. I have two grown-up neurodiverse children and a crazy German Shepherd who keeps me on my toes.
Why Vector Wild Exists
When Richard and I first started talking, it quickly became apparent that we both saw how we could have an impact for positive change — in ways wider than just a simple canoe trip. Vector Wild helps young people step outside, slow down, connect with who they really are, be less afraid, and see their own amazing potential.
